5G and Small Cells

Small cells are transforming the communications network, providing coverage in hard-to-reach places and offloading capacity for bandwidth-constrained macro cells. While valuable for 4G/LTE, they are absolutely essential for 5G and the requirements for ultra-low latency. Powering these distributed devices requires a toolbox of solutions tailored to each provider’s network architecture.

Electricity is not always readily available at a small cell site and connecting to the grid can be time consuming and expensive. Many network builders are now providing their own power.

With a technology called Remote Line Power (RLP), a single connection to the power grid can supply power to dozens of small cells. Utility AC power is converted to DC, which is then connected to copper cables for delivery to the remote sites. The copper cables are deployed alongside fiber backhaul cables, making it as easy to pull power as it is to pull fiber.
