YOUR RUNTIME TARGET MAY BE FAMILIAR. YOUR WORKLOAD MAY NOT BE.

Stop asking: “Which battery do we use?”
Start asking: "Which energy storage system supports our workload requirements?”

A UPS energy storage specification designed around runtime is no longer enough, especially for today’s high-density data centers.

AI training clusters, accelerated compute, HPC, and other advanced digital infrastructure are placing new stress on power systems. The question is not only how much backup power is available. It is how the system behaves when demand moves quickly, loads become more dynamic, and the UPS energy storage system is called on to deliver high power over a shorter window.

DataSafe Noir™ energy storage system from EnerSys is a system-level lithium energy storage platform for high-density, dynamic-load, mission-critical environments. It is designed around workload behavior, short-duration high-power duty profiles, and the operating stress placed on modern data center power infrastructure.

The inherited standard may not tell the full story

Many UPS energy storage decisions still begin with the same familiar checklist: runtime, chemistry, footprint, cost, and maintenance.

All important. None of them enough on their own.

In high-density environments, that checklist can move the discussion too quickly into a battery comparison before the workload has been properly examined. A 15-minute runtime target may still be the right answer. In some environments, it will be. But in short-duration, high-power applications, it may be an inherited assumption from a different power profile.

DataSafe Noir™ energy storage system helps data center teams review the application before the familiar convention becomes the default specification.

Designed for short-duration, high-power UPS applications

Some data center environments remain well served by established battery technologies. Others are moving into a different operating profile.

DataSafe Noir™ energy storage system is designed for sites where energy storage has to be judged by more than a runtime figure. Power density, high-rate discharge performance, footprint, efficiency, and system simplicity can all influence the final specification.

It is especially relevant when a project involves:
◼ Dynamic load behavior
◼ Short-duration, high-power UPS duty profiles
◼ 5-minute rate applications where appropriate
◼ Legacy battery standards under review
◼ Space-constrained electrical rooms
◼ High-density compute environments
◼ Mission-critical power resilience

This is not a like-for-like battery upgrade. It is an application-led approach to energy storage, shaped by the workload, the duty profile, and the site constraints.

More power from less space

When power requirements rise, the energy storage system can quickly become a space and complexity issue. The DataSafe Noir™ energy storage system is designed to deliver high power and energy density in a compact lithium-based platform.

Fewer cabinets can change the project

As UPS energy storage systems scale, complexity often scales with them. More cabinets can mean more space, more cabling, more installation time, higher weight, and more coordination across the project.

DataSafe Noir™ energy storage system is designed to help reduce that burden through compact system architecture and high-density performance.

DataSafe-Noir-space-saving9.jpg

In a 1.2 MW system analysis, a DataSafe Noir™ system configuration used two 600 kW cabinets. A traditional competitor configuration supporting a similar system power level required approximately seven lower-power cabinets.

That difference can influence the design in practical ways, from reduced cabling complexity and lower installation burden to more efficient use of floor space and simpler planning for high-power deployments. For data center environments where every square meter has value, energy storage density is not a secondary detail.

Safety by Design

In high-density UPS energy storage applications, safety cannot be treated as a single feature or final checklist item. It has to be considered across the system architecture.

DataSafe Noir™ energy storage system is designed with protection measures at cell, module, and cabinet level, helping data center teams evaluate safety alongside power density, footprint, efficiency, and workload fit.

CELL-LEVEL

  • Explosion-proof valve
  • Flame-retardant film

MODULE-LEVEL

  • Module-level fire protection module
  • Module-level fuse
  • Thermal isolation design using UL94-V0 flame-retardant plastic
  • Leakage-proof tray design
  • Comprehensive temperature threshold monitoring, with 20 temperature probes monitoring each cell’s temperature to provide early warning and protection

CABINET-LEVEL

  • Circuit breaker
  • Fuse
  • Contactor
  • Leakage detection RCD
  • Built-in EPO, with configurable EPO button or external EPO dry contact signal
  • Optional cabinet-level fire protection

For high-density data center environments, this layered design helps support controlled operation across the energy storage system, with protection features built in from cell to module to cabinet.

REVIEW THE SPECIFICATION BEFORE THE WORKLOAD TESTS IT

THE SITES BEING PLANNED NOW NEED MORE THAN A BATTERY COMPARISON. THEY NEED ENERGY STORAGE STRATEGIES SHAPED AROUND HOW MODERN WORKLOADS BEHAVE UNDER STRESS. DATASAFE NOIR™ ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM HELPS CUSTOMERS CONTROL HOW POWER BEHAVES UNDER STRESS — WITH A SYSTEM-LEVEL LITHIUM PLATFORM DESIGNED FOR SHORT-DURATION, HIGH-POWER, MISSION-CRITICAL UPS APPLICATIONS.

Why EnerSys

EnerSys brings decades of critical power experience to the next generation of data center energy storage. That experience matters because DataSafe Noir™ energy storage system is not just a battery technology story. It is an application-led platform for customers making technically demanding power resilience decisions.

EnerSys helps customers review the workload, duty profile, UPS requirement, site constraints, and long-term resilience strategy before settling on the specification.

Most alternatives start with the battery. DataSafe Noir™ energy storage system starts with the workload.
