1,000 trees for 101 years

The EnerSys Bielsko-Biała factory is located at the foot of the Beskids in Poland. It is one of the largest traction battery plants in Europe producing over 2.2 million 2V cells and 60,000 modular chargers annually for the EMEA, Asian and Australian markets.

The factory first opened in 1922, and although it wasn’t an EnerSys factory when it was first opened, it’s been in operation for over 100 years, a legacy that warranted celebration for modern day EnerSys colleagues.

As a battery manufacturer that supports the transition to a low-carbon economy, Bielsko-Biała employees chose Earth Day 2023 to commemorate the factory’s centennial birthday by planting over 1,000 local trees in the Gmina Hazlach region of Poland. The trees were planted on land that was previously used for agriculture but is now being recultivated by Polish naturalists in an initiative to harbor safe spaces for native plants and animals.

The teambuilding activity was planned by Katarzyna Ryłko, Senior HR Manager Poland, Nordics, Spain & East Europe, and Monika Antoń, Human Resources Manager of Manufacturing Training.

On Friday, April 21, 2023 – the day before Earth Day – our Polish colleagues wrapped up the workday by boarding a bus to the planting site. Over 40 employees were in attendance to celebrate not only Earth Day and the inception of the factory 101 years ago, but also to celebrate the oncoming of Spring and the warmer weather months.

“We’re constantly looking for ways to promote team building – especially for good causes near work,” said Katarzyna. “Sustainability is a big part of our culture at EnerSys, and my colleagues love participating in ways that give back,” she said.
