EnerSys helps power Parker Solar Probe


Launched on August 12, 2018, the NASA® Parker Solar Probe is on its way to the sun. It is being powered, in part, by an ABSL™ lithium-ion space battery from EAS. NASA is undertaking the mission to advance our understanding of the processes that heat the sun’s corona and accelerate the solar wind – two mysteries that have been puzzling scientists for decades.

Built by Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), the Parker Solar Probe spacecraft will travel at 125 miles per second as it flies through the sun’s atmosphere as close as 3.8 million miles to our star’s surface – well within Mercury’s orbit and more than seven times closer than any previous spacecraft has come before. As it withstands temperatures of up to 2,500°F, the probe will capture detailed measurements of the sun from space.

Our ABSL battery will power the probe’s flight and scientific instrumentation as it orbits the sun 24 times over the seven-year mission span. This advanced lithium-ion battery has a 25 ampere-hours capacity through a 28-volt system and is designed to perform a variety of charge and discharge cycles over the mission duration.
